Discover the history behind hemp below.
The beginning of hemp
Hemp dates back to ancient China, around 5000 BCE. Initially, it was used for making textiles, paper and rope. As we know, this isn’t only easily spun and converted into clothing, but it also has fantastic durability, making it ideal for everyday wear.
It wasn’t just used in China – the use of hemp spread across other regions. This includes India and the Middle East, where it was utilised for its medicinal properties.
Hemp in the 19th and 20th centuries
In the 19th century, hemp was popular for textiles and ropes. Producing strong fibres was a major crop that was even used in the United States as a cash crop.
Flash forward to the 20th century, the popularity of hemp started to decline. This was partially due to strict regulations which impacted the hemp industry. However, it later saw a resurgence in the US as the military used essential items, including ropes and uniforms. This use saw the government encourage farms to grow hemp once again.
However, hemp's popularity saw another decline towards the end of the 20th century.
Hemp in recent times
Recent times have brought a revival to hemp. Commonly used for industry and medicinal uses, there has been a new interest in hemp, with more countries beginning to legalise hemp cultivation.
Nowadays, hemp is used in the production of various items. Not only is it still used in textiles, but it is also used in building materials, paper and food products. The power of hemp and its valuable properties has had a significant impact worldwide, with the global hemp community relying on its many traits to improve their lifestyle in several ways.
